A Note on Anonymous Posting

June 24th 2008

Three months into this venture it's probably time to refresh the posting rules for First Over. We simply don't accept anonymous posts. Whether they are nice or not, whether they make great sense or not, we just won't do it. We believe that people should have the courage of their convictions and that requiring posters to identify themselves is one way to ensure that the discussions and debates we have here are civil. After all, we may disagree on certain policies and procedures but we all are drawn here by our love for harness racing and our desire to see it last.

I raise the issue again today because I have received two posts from CCC, neither of which, standing alone, are in any way objectionable. One wished me a happy birthday-- sarcastically or not I do not know. And one raised the issue of sulky failure in the Jason Bartlett spill. Neither is going to be posted, however. So whomever you are, Mr. or Mrs. CCC, please let us know so that we can add your voice to the mix we have here. We don't think it's an unfair rule and we ask that you follow it if you want to play along here at First Over.

Very good point Allan. I never even considered the ubiquitous search engines when I posted with both first and last name. Perhaps now I should become (semi-)incognito with my first name only!!

Seriously however, other people posting ought to take heed of Allan's observations; his comments might have contemporary significance for them.

I started using my first name only to keep (minimize) my name from being captured by search engines as some employers search the internet to see what their prospective employees are involved in as some make decisions to hire or not based on this. For those who are self employed, this may not be an issue. I certainly keep my comments respectful and intelligent (I would like to think), but some employers may pass judgement based on someone's activities and opinions. Am I paranoid? Perhaps, but until I hit that seven figure Pick 6 or am no longer dependent on someone for employment, it is a prudent course of action.

Don't think it can happen? I just went into the Yahoo search engine and put in my first and last name and up came some of my earlier comments in this blog when I used first and last names. If you have been posting for awhile on this or any other blog, you may see this also.

From what Andrew has done in the past in the blog, he obviously checks the contributors out before posting some comments (as the blogmeister, he has the right to make that determination where it is appropriate). Perhaps in a future upgrade of the blog, there can be a registration process where you can put your full name and information and pick a user name where they can verify you are who you say you are.

From Andrew: I will pass this suggestion along to my bosses.

Well said, Andrew.

While most of the time the posts are presented with the first and last name of the individual, I have noticed some posts with only the first name of the individual. I don't remember noticing any with only the last name of the individual. My observations relating to the single name presented have some inherent assumptions on whether the single name is the first or last name of the individual!!. But, what is the policy on complete identification or name of the individual who is posting?

And a truly Happy Birthday to you.

From Andrew: Eli, let us not split hairs.
