Burlington Drawn: Wow, That's Three Fine Races!

May 27th 2008

Here from Karen Briggs at WEG is the draw for Saturday's Burlington Stakes at Mohawk. My initial reaction? Holy cow, that's three good races. Dali with the rail against Sand Shooter in the first; SBSW from the pole against Santanna Blue Chip in the second; and Deuce Seelster, Lonestar Legend, Upfront Hannahsboy and Keystone Horatio in the third-- along with all the other fine colts and geldings mixed in. Folks, if you don't see drama and excitement here you don't have a pulse for harness racing.

Send me your thoughts and predictions for how you see it all playing out.

From Bob Marks on this topic:

"Yes as some have posted it is a glorious card at Mowhawk on Saturday.

It would have been even more glorious had the two PACING DIVISIONS OF THE DISPUTED CLASSIC SERIES ACTUALLY FILLED.....

But they didn't and you might note potential Classic candidates like Messers Big and Feelgood sprinkled about either The Meadowlands or Chester this weekend.

In that funding for the CLASSIC SERIES is arbitrarily extracted from yearlings sold at the major sales by the sales company from both sellers and buyers, it is NEWS when these events fail to fill or attract short fields as they so often do."

I'm still in awe over here looking at this card...all the top ones are in together....what a final this should turn out to be.

My picks are identical to Jared's for these races...and for the same reasons...the post positions.

I think that the best chance for an upset actually lies with Santana Blue Chip over SBSW........because of the latter's recent hoof problem and subsequent reduction in training time.

To everyone who can't see it at home via streaming video.....it might be worth the trip to your local racetrack to watch the simulcast. I'll be watching these from the Big M while having drinks with my crew at Stake Your Claim Stable.

We have our work cut out for us, but that's horse racing! This is a good batch of 3yr olds, and we'll have to have DDO step up and show what he can do, even from the 9 hole. We moved from the 7 hole last week to the 9, and Mr Nice Guy moved from the 4 hole to the 7, with Harley D Hanover moved from the 6 hole to the 8. That will make this race very interesting. Some of those inside horses will have an opportunity to step out front. I expect the winning time will be a little quicker than the elims. Our colt went in 1:51.2 on a 5/8th mile track, which is at least 1 second slower than the Meadowlands, so I know there's room for improvement over last week. I certainly hope our horse will have a smoother start than last week off the gate.

I'm going to go with Dali over Sand Shooter and Art Official.
I'm going to go with Somebeachsomewhere over Santanna Blue Chip.
And I'll go with Deuce Seelster over Lonestar Legend and Upfront Hannasboy.

As a bonus pick (and for my boy) I am picking Corleone Kosmos over Lanson and Arch Madness in the Classic Series Horse Trot. I hope they make Saturdays races available streaming on the net, between the Burlington elims and the Classic Series, Mohawk is going to have a great night of racing!

BTW, Andrew, your horse looked awesome this past weekend, I wish you all the luck in the world!

From Andrew: Thanks, Bryan. I appreciate it. I already got a full answer from WEG on the streaming. Hopefully you can figure out a way to watch it live-- otherwise, Standardbred Canada usually has the races up quickly thereafter. Go Corleone!

Thank goodness Share The Delight isn't eligible, and DDO decided to go the route of New Jersey Classic!!

I hope both of my colts (Dali, On The Brink) will make strong showings for themselves.

I won't handicap the first two divisions (because I can not be objective), but I think that if Lonestar Legend can make his own luck he should win the third division.

It should be great racing, and all three divisions look to be pretty even which is nice.

From Andrew: Welcome back, Aaron. Hope OTB in particular has better luck than both our colts had at the EBC! I don't think Dali needs much luck. Please make sure (if you can) that you post here as appropriate the rest of the week. We'd like to hear your thoughts, and Duane's thoughts, on the big races.

I'll pick Dali over Sandshooter, only because of the post positions.

I'll go with Somebeachsomewhere over On the Brink and Santanna Bluechip, again because of the post positions.

In the last division, I'll go with Deuce Seelster, Lonestar Legend, and then Keystone Horatio and Upfront Hannahsboy.

From Andrew: Hey, Jared. Care to comment on your colt's PP in the big Jersey race? I am going to blog about it tomorrow. I figured I would focus today on Burlington. That lineup at the Big M on Saturday is pretty impressive, too!

Some great racing and potential competitors, indeed. Any ideas on how us statesiders might be able to catch this action live? Is it still controlled by a third party vendor?

In any event, choices are Dali, SBSW, and Deuce Seelster in the three elims this weekend-with Santanna Blue Chip as a potential upset candidate in second group.

Good luck and racing to all the participants and their connections.

From Andrew: I will check with WEG folks about their online streaming product.
