Let's just wait and see what's going to shake out. There's only so much fortunetelling that will actually come to pass. We have some previously unheard of non winners of 2 going in 49 and change last week at club med.....and they're all coming out now.
No doubt that SBSW, Dali, Santana and the other canadian colts looked sharp in their qualifiers...they picked up right where they left off last year. I'm happy my colt doesn't have to face them at all until later this year (if he does at all) as he is NJ sired and protected from them.
The question is who's going to come out of the woodwork this year to challenge them. The Berrys Creek bunch doesn't look to be an overwhelming group right now...but there are some American colts who will be a suprise.
Looks to be a great 3 year old season shaping up.

He's headed to the Burlington, and on to the N A Cup. The triple crown events, and the Breeder's Crown are also on the schedule.
Last year he didn't make very much money because he got sick early in the campaign and lost a lot of weight. He missed two months of the season. When he returned to racing, he went in 1:51.4 at Lexington for a third place finish in the Intl Stallion Stakes behind Dali and Sadler Hanover. That was his best race of the year. That's why he's 60 to 1 in the NA Cup rankings. He has trained down nicely this spring with a few quick training miles under his belt that have given us reason to be very happy. On the breeding, he is by Artiscape, and his mother is by Niatross. Her mother is by Bret Hanover! Not bad for a "homebred". I also own part of Deposit's yearling brother, by Modern Art. His name is Daleys Interest, and he's as good looking as Deposit. I think it will be fun to join you as we watch this season unfold.

You have to wonder whether something's not right with Riggins. In a very unSchnittkerlike qualifier, the horse is wrangled back to last, sits there until the head of the stretch and only passes three horses when turned loose in the lane.
Now he's making his seasonal debut on Sunday, not in stakes competition, but in a rather ordinary looking overnight race.

I have been waiting all winter for this day to come. We have known for some time that Daley Deposit Only is a special colt. Just look at his family tree. I'm starting to feel like Icarus right about now!
From Andrew: Congratulations, Jared! Wow, what a mile! Where is the horse headed next? And can you share a little more here about him? I hope you will also join me here on First Over in chronicling the 3-year-old season. The two of us, and Aaron with his fine colts, would make a good newspaper team of owners.

I thought I saw Riggins is in to go at Saratoga this weekend, and of note, Daley Deposit Only qualified in 51.2 for Dan Daley at Pompano this morning. I think that derserves a little attention.
From Andrew: Good points, John. I think Riggins is in to go on Sunday and I did not see Daley Deposit Only but clearly with a line like that he deserves mention. Thanks for the heads up. Keep me posted!

oh yeah 2 more U.S. colts set to do battle in the Berry's Creek- Bullville Powerful (boy does he look like a slightly smaller version of Bettors Delight) and Mucho Sleazy...so I wouldn't count out Team America yet...it would be intersting to have a Canada vs. US 3 year old invitational during a hole in this years schedule (that would allow for some pretty dynamic marketing). Invite the top five canadian owned/trained vs. the top five U.S. owned/trained....hey Andrew I think your onto something with this rivalry!
From Andrew: Good point-- it would be like the World Cup in hockey. Thanks for pointing out the other horses, Aaron. I know Meant to be Me (also trained by Linda Toscano) is a really good candidate and so is Lonestar Legend. I knew I wasn't naming them all!

Even though my money (literally) rides on the Canadian Contingent, after a little thought I would give the American contingent a little more credit. Other than Share The Delight and Genuwine who qualified well, there have been some other interesting U.S. sophomores including Idle Hour, Real Tough, Badlands Nitro, Its That Time......also in qualifying action Sand Shooter, Lonestar Legend, and Meant To Be Me appear to have returned in good current form.

Andrew if there's any horse that Somebeachsomewhere, Dali etc. have to be worried about from the States I think its going to be Share The Delight (although I heard Genuwine looked pretty good as well). I believe this could be the best crop of three year old pacers in atleast a decade or maybe ever, and we'll be ecstatic if Dali and On The Brink are part of the mix. Dali was under wraps this morning with the plugs still in and Luc was grabbing for leather down the lane!! I think the Empire Breeders is setting up to be a showcase of 3 year old talent, and will be proof of the dramatic improvement of the New York breeding and sire stakes programs. When Share The Delight, Bullville Powerful, Riggins, On The Brink, Southwind Lark all hook up I think it will be the deepest race so far of the sophomore campaign. I look forward to alot of friendly competition with Share The Delight this year, and hopefully I will see you in Tioga!
