One of my most interesting discoveries over the past few weeks is the work and attitude of Kelly Spencer, who does the marketing and publicity at Grand River Raceway up in Ontario. As you can tell from the site, she does an amazing job of pushing the envelope to entice and attract people to our sport.

Here is an email I got earlier this week from Kelly, whom I have "deputized" to keep me in the loop on creative ideas and concepts that crop up from back in my home and native land. She directed me to this site:

And told me this: "This is a new website designed to appeal to male leaders ages 18-34. The intent is to land the targeted demographic to this site where they can browse content and play the online game which will give them a fun and interactive three-level wagering tutorial. Once players have completed all three levels of the game, they can enter to win a $10,000 Night At The Races.

"Our hope is that the website will not only entice visitors to visit a nearby track, but also equip them with a basic knowledge of racing and wagering. This online experience will empower them to hit the ground running. Our target demo is a leader among his friends; if our tactics are successful, this target demo will share his newfound skills with his associates.

"This site is the result of about 2 years of work by the Standardbred Revenue Allocation (SRA) Marketing Committee, which is responsible for administering funding from the Horse Improvement Program towards provincial programs that create new racing fans and new horse owners while promoting Ontario harness racing. Promotion of the site is being driven virally by a team of Viral Marketing Professionals at Launch! (the agency working on behalf of the SRA Committee)."

Andrew again... check it out and let me know what you think

"A+ for effort. C- for execution"

That a pretty accurate summery of the situation. We found our (Harnesslink's) YouTube account spammed by people telling us to "google get sulky".

It looks like the marketing company paid people to set up fake YouTube accounts and post comments everywhere trying entice people to go to the website.

"Male Leaders"? "Targeted Demographic"? "Empower Them to hit the ground running?" "Being virally driven by a team of Viral Marketing Professionals?"

Someone's swallowed the jargon of an Internet Marketing 101 class hook line and sinker.

Excuse my cynicism.

A+ for effort. C- for execution, but then again I'm not a "Male Leader 18-34."
