Finger Lake-ing Good Idea for Horse Adoption

August 27th 2008

Good morning. First Over Friend Allan Schott passed along this interesting story about how Finger Lakes Gaming and Racetrack is helping to adopt out older T-breds through a creative on-track program. It's not cheap but perhaps components of it can be copied over here on the harness side of the fence, where far too many former racehorses remain in danger of being slaughtered and then eaten.

If I recall correctly, in Ontario it is mandated a percentage of the handle is used for this type of purpose.

Yes, Finger Lakes provides the facilities to allow for this. This is very unique. Being many people ship their horses in these days, it would be nice if tracks with stabling on grounds would provide some stalls for these types of groups and allow them to use their facilities to get these horses acclimated and on their way to new homes. It would also create a safe haven where people can drop of their horses without incurring any expense; sadly, there are some people who if they are going to have to pay to have their horse shipped to a facility, it isn't going to be a rescue group.

There are numerous adoption programs and they all do important work. If I'm reading this correctly, the "unique" portion of the program is that it takes place on Finger Lakes' property and that track employees volunteer. What I don't see in the article is any mention that the track or horsemen finance the program. These folks are in the same position as all the other adoption programs - fund raising all the time.

What we need is a mechanism that supports these programs out of the handle and/or sales proceeds.

Needless to say "bravo" to these folks and all the other rescue groups for their work.
