From WEG on online video streaming of Burlington

May 27th 2008

Here from Bruce Murray, Veep at WEG, is the official policy on their online streaming. It's not great news, I'm afraid, to those of us here Stateside hoping to watch the races at home on your computer. Here is Bruce's email:

Hi Andrew:

Unfortunately, video streaming on our products is available to HPIBET.com (Horseplayer Interactive) members only. At present, due to CPMA (Canadian Pari-Mutuel Association) regs, a person must have a Canadian address to become an HPI account member. Further below is a quote from our VP of Marketing & Business Development Andrew MacDonald when we first launched HPIBET.com.

Also attached a link to a CPMA discussion document that Canadian racetracks like ours are supporting. And a link to further discussion on regulatory reform. I'm sure that's way too much information for a simple question, but in the meantime, I hope your bloggers have access to Mohawk via their local track or offtrack outlet.

From Andrew MacDonald:

"As for access, while HPIBET.com may be available from a suitable computer located anywhere in the world, there are some limitations on where users can be based.

"We don't accept accounts from most states due to a number of reasons," said Macdonald. "Some states have asked us not to accept accounts, and for business reasons we have agreements in place with major account operations in the U.S., whereby we do not take accounts in their states and they do not take accounts from Canada.

"As for Canada, the CPMA divides the country into home market areas for account wagering," he continued. "Each of those home market areas belong to a track. You can only set up accounts within your own home market area. We have partner track agreements across Canada. We have agreements in place in every province except Manitoba and Quebec. There are other holes in Canada including northern Ontario, because of Sudbury Downs, and southern Alberta because of Stampede Park. The rest of Canada is virtually covered by HPI."

No phrase describes harness racing's leadership so accurately and succinctly as "The light's on, but nobody's home."

Hey Danny,
I'm a Charlie Rose fan.
About two weeks ago he interviewed author
Jonathan Zittrain, on his book "The Future of the Internet--And How to Stop It".

Zittrain claims that the so-called "yonger generation" holds little interest in the internet rather portable all-in-one systems (Pods, cell-phones, TV's and such).
He even claimed that there will be a BIG expnading market on what are called "closed systems".

Imagine watching all the previous Hambletonian races or all previous LBJ Races whilst your riding a bus. . LOL

Without free video streaming, I don't know what we'd have ever done, as we could never hear Ken call the Walter Whelan-John Holmes battles at Flamboro circa 1990. Damn that Warkentin for going "big city" :)

With most wagering and non-wagering businesses it seems streaming free over the web is a growth strategy now, I think maybe Woodbine might want to try it? I can watch Lost episodes now via the web legally, despite the push to sell their DVD's and advertising dollars. I wonder why as a wagering business would we not want to show big races live?

CBSsportsline.com (Andrew should like that plug!) has some sort of deal with many tracks to stream their races at their site for free. Would it not be a good idea for big stakes nights like Saturday for Woodbine/Mohawk to stream there (using the CBS infrastructure at no cost to WEG) and offer horse owners and potential punters access to this great night of racing?

This is typical of harness racing; dwindling attendance,
reduced handle and now the industry PROHIBITS
free video streaming not just of Mohawk but of every track except for
the Big M, Harrington, Ocean Downs. Youbet.com allows
30 minutes daily for free, unless you wish top pay a monthly services.
The entire younger generation will tell you, if it is not
on the computer, it does not exist in their universe.
Once again, penny-wise pound foolish harness industry executives,
owners, breeders and racing commissioners do not have a clue or just
don not care about the future.

Ken,
All you need to do is call the HPI watts (800) number or send them an email to determine what information they require for verification and they'll provide the previously issued numbers.

Sounds like collusion to me. I thought there were laws against this kind of stuff to protect the consumer.

It was a bit of a hassle, but I had to set up a nonwagering Woodbine account a few years ago, had to FAX personal info just to watch the races, so it can be done from NJ, however, somehow I lost the account # and PIN etc., welcome to 2008

HPI does have restrictions against US residents for wagering.

HOWEVER, HPI allows US Residents FREE registration for video and past performances. Possibly even other services.
It does require faxing identification to verify US residence and it takes a few days.
Thus if you desire to watch the Burlington races?
Get it in gear!

Visit the HPI website.
