You need only to read
this piece by John Brennan in today's Bergen County Record to understand why horse racing in the Garden State is going to continue to get the shaft so long as Governor Jon Corzine has the reins.
Here is what Brennan wrote: "Governor Corzine turned salesman at the East Coast Gaming Congress on Tuesday, urging casino industry officials to continue to invest in the state, even in the face of an uncertain economic climate.
'We'd love to see your money, your capital, here in the state of New Jersey,' Corzine told a crowd of several hundred at the Atlantic City Convention Center. 'I hope you will take measure of the risks, and then understand that the rewards can be quite substantial.' Corzine faced a more sympathetic audience at the annual event than did predecessor James McGreevey, whose creation of new casino taxes angered industry moguls."
No doubt Corzine "faced a more sympathetic audience" of casino heads! With one hand he protects them from racetrack slots and with the other hand he begs on their behalf for capital. At the least, you would think, he'd link one thing to the other. As in, "hey, casinos, I will try to raise capital for you if you agree to allow slots at racetracks." But, no, that would mean that Corzine would be a decent pol and Lord knows he is not.
