Happy Dominion Day! (I mean, Canada Day)

July 1st 2008

It's Canada Day. On July 1, 1867, Canada politely asserted a measure of independence from Britain (no revolutions, please, for polite Canucks). And what has Canada done for harness racing? A helluva lot.

The beautiful country has given us John Campbell and John Chapman. It has given us the Waples family and the Lachance family and the Wellwood family. It has given us Jacques Hebert and Benoit Cote and Bill O'Donnell and Clint Galbraith. Hanover's Murray Brown? Born in Canada. Right now, the country is giving us all Somebeachsomewhere.

So on this Canada Day let's play the name game. Greatest Canadian-based harness horses of all time.... and the stories behind them. Send them my way and I'll get them posted.

Here's a few: Chief Maid, Handle With Care, Timely Knight ... And why stop with Harness Horses? Ever hear of Northern Dancer?

From Andrew: Thanks, Guy. Silent Majority, too!

How about Helicopter, the first horse from outside the U.S.A. to win the Hambletonian and her daughter, the great Armbro Flight, one of the greatest trotting mares of all time. In fact all the Armbro horses which have left their imprint on all our greatest trotting and pacing stakes!

From Andrew: You are right on, Dave. I forgot the Armstrong Brothers in my list. And I have to say that Armbro Omaha remains one of my all-time favorite horses.

You forgot about Andrew Cohen!!!

From Andrew: Thanks, Murray. But I am going to have to do a lot more in and for this sport before I make it up there with the folks I named-- and the folks Don Daniels named. It's a good goal to shoot for, though, right?

There still photo's online from the October 2008 Roast of Jack Kopas at Western Fair, which Frank Salive happened to mention in his season ending PR as a highlight:

Here's a nice cameo of Jack and Super Wave from the 1970 USTA Publicity Photo's (8 X 10 Prints may still be available from USTA):

A slight omission ;) of Ben White in my earlier submission:

Jerry Shively article on Ben from October 1985 <a href="http://shop.ustrotting.com/backissues.aspx"Hoof Beats

There's a really unique photo of Ben White and Ben III working horses (Lexington) when Benny was in his early teens in the Kentucky Digitial Archives (bunches of photo's there), CLICK on the smaller thumbnails to view larger images

I don't know if these horses qualify for this, Andrew, but I remember Super Clint and Jade Prince setting the harness racing world on its ear when they were 2 year olds at The Red Mile for the Jack Kopas Stable and I'm certain the Kopas clan is from Canada and made their mark on our sport.

Cam Fella will get my vote as the greatest Canadian-based harness horse.

A horse with great heart, he only went as fast as was necessary to win, which is reflected in his relatively slow mark of 153.1.

On the track, he is probably best remembered for his race at the Meadowlands against the theoretically faster Its Fritz. Cam Fella, seemingly beaten by Its Fritz, digs in and surges back past his rival to capture the race. He simply refused to be beaten.

Historically speaking there are many, many Canadians that have made tremenodus contributions to the stanardbred comunity.

"Some" of those that remain obscure in today's reflections?
