Let's Find Getaway Hall's Owner

July 2nd 2008

Good Wednesday morning. And here is a story that will get you going this morning even before your coffee does. An abandoned harness horse-- name of Getaway Hall-- who was found roaming around the roads of Delaware, apparently abandoned by its owner. The good news is that the horse was taken in for care by a kind horseman. The bad news is that this is not an isolated incident-- in Delaware or anywhere else.

I would love to find the person or persons who let the horse loose and put him or her in a room for a few hours with Meg Jewitt Leavitt and Ellen Harvey and the rest of the Starfishers who routinely rescue horses from slaughter and then adopt them out to caring new owners. Wouldn't you?

What, if anything have the Delaware State Police done about this? This is a crime and deserves to be prosecuted.

I thought about my own experiences when I read that. Each horse that had to go to a farm that we owned we did our best to find him or her a nice spot. However, I do not know if a few of them still are where they are because I have never checked up on a few (after some time). Any other owner feel that way? I wonder if this could be one of my horses one day. Which would be sad because I sure as hell don't want it to happen and I always tried my best to find them a nice place to live.

Not to be vulgar, but if the horse's owner is male, he should be strung up by his you-know-whats.

This person should be banned for life.

BTW, if you look at the pullthepocket blog, they talk about how Suffolk Downs will now deny stalls permanently for any trainer that sends a horse to slaughter. Yes, there are ways around it, but wouldn't it be great if the tracks permanently refused entries from any owner/trainer that sends their horse to slaughter?.

From Andrew: Indeed, it would. By the way, I emailed Alan Leavitt and he said that if the horse doesn't find a permanent home up there Walnut Hall will figure out a way to ensure he is well cared for. A very cool gesure, in my opinion.
