More information about Big M qualifyiers

Carol Hodes is no longer affiliated with the Meadowlands but, as most of you know, she was for a long time an important part of the Big M crew. She was kind enough today to help answer my "whine" yesterday about the slow response time for posting qualifying results at the Meadowlands and the fact that the track should stream the races live.

Here is what Carol (again, she no longer speaks for the Meadowlands, remember, so things may have changed somewhat): wrote: "I am assuming things haven’t changed at the Meadowlands since I left so let me fill you in on the matter of qualifiers. Unlike the live racing when there is a dedicated person on duty to handle the charts, clean them up [all the extra info that is added to charts] and post them race by race [which only a small percentage of tracks do], there is not a person paid to be there in that capacity during qualifiers. Instead, they are posted by virtue of automated actions taken by the chartcaller and they go up without benefit of driver changes, etc. That is subsequently 'cleaned up' by the person who does the gig at night [around 5-6 p.m.]. If the chartcaller doesn’t transmit them until all the qualifiers are over, then you have to consider that there were 15 qualifiers that day and there will be a lag in time. As quickly as they do run off the Qs, it is most likely the person charting them does not have time to deal with that business until the races are over.

"Most tracks DO NOT videotape their qualifiers. This requires having paid staff to do so. The Meadowlands decided to make this commitment a few years ago and they transmit the file to outlets that want it, including RaceReplay, in the early evening. This is a matter of the cost of satellite time. They aren’t going to pay the freight on the extra satellite time for live streaming. They wait until their window of time for the nightly races begins to do the transmission. Of course, if someone stepped up and offered to sponsor it, I’m sure they’d be happy to do them live."
