First Over friend, and noted harness writer, owner and lawyer Chris Wittstruck sent me
this story earlier today about a group of new fans to the sport (albeit T-breds) how they came to be involved. Here is an illustrative graph from the Blood-Horse blog post by Craig Bandoroff-- it came after his account of taking him to watch the races at the Harvard Club:
"That Monday morning, as I entered our meeting to prepare for the day’s classes, I was greeted with the announcement, 'We want you to get us in the horse business.' My mates now want to own a racehorse and have some of the fun and excitement for themselves. Despite my attempts to convince them a horse would quickly separate them, the new fools, from their money, they were not to be discouraged. So after some unsuccessful attempts to throw cold water on their scheme, I relented. Word soon spread, and then more new fools wanted to ante up and get in."
We need more of this in our sport. More grassroots recruiting. More sacrifice from existing owners and trainers and drivers and track officials to get new people to see the action so that they, too, can fall in love with it.
