PA victory a lesson for Kentucky

April 17th 2008

Short but good piece posted this afternoon here at harnessracing.com on how Pennsylvania's slots success is translating into lower school tax rates for citizens. Seems to me that's a winning argument to make in Kentucky and in any other state waffling on bringing gaming to the races.

As I live in PA which never had casino gaming I can see how it's an attractive argument.....for we Pennsylvanians. For those in NJ......all you'll accomplish by adding slots at the tracks is to cannibalize the revenues the state receives from the casions you have now. You could approach the casino's with the argument that a shorter drive time to the racetracks will result in greater consumer convenience....probably not an argument that will persuade many casino execs....unless they're going to get a bigger slice of the pie if they have a hand in running the slots / games at the tracks. The politicians will dance to the tune of the casino's long before they take the side of the track operators. You'll need to recruit casino support before anything happens.

If there's any state in the union that needs school tax relief, it's New Jersey. All we've ever heard from horsemen and the racetracks is how much slot machines are needed to preserve the racing and breeding industry. Perhaps if we suggested that revenue from racinos should be dedicated to property tax relief we would get more support from the politicians in Trenton.
