Waples: Somebeach the next Niatross?

Somebeachsomewhere qualified this morning at Mohawk in 151.1. Here is the link to the harnessracing.com story that says so.

And here is some color from the Insider site at Standardbred Canada: "'He's ready to rock 'n roll,'" trainer and co-owner Brent MacGrath told Trot Insider right after Somebeachsomewhere recorded a dominant open-length victory clocked in a sizzling 1:51.1. After leaving from Post 3 in Race 4, MacDonell and the World Record-holding Mach Three colt worked out a two-hole trip early behind Legacy N Diamonds (driven by Jody Jamieson). Legacy N Diamonds tripped the opening stanza in 28 seconds flat.

MacDonell moved his unbeaten mount from the pocket up the backstretch and it was lights out from there. The half was reached in :56.2; the three-quarters in 1:24, and Somebeachsomewhere charged home with a :27.1 kicker to post the impressive 10 and three-quarter length victory.

'This will be his only qualifier,' said MacGrath, who stated that they were looking for the unbeaten three-year-old to go a mile this morning in about 1:52 and change. MacGrath confirmed that Somebeachsomewhere is to make his much-anticipated seasonal debut Saturday, May 17 at Mohawk in an Ontario Sires Stakes Gold Elimination."

Back to Andrew: As an owner I'm not sure I would be thrilled with such a trip the first time after a long layoff but I know there are many others who disagree. So, the question of the day is: is Brent MacGrath's method here madness? What are the pros and cons of pushing a sophomore to 151.1 in early May? Explain it to me like I am an 11--year-old.

UPDATE: Beverly Smith of the Globe and Mail, in a piece about the horse, reports that Ron Waples has compared Somebeachsomewhere to Niatross. Niatross. Do we have a potential Niatross in the house?

The next Niatross? That's like saying the next Jesus Christ. It'll never happen. Ever.

Whether it's good or bad to qualify that fast is not that important.SBSW may be a horse that harness racing can use to market our sport to the masses. There is no doubt that people will come out to the track to see a great horse race.Track marketing people should be licking their chops if and when this horse comes to their racetrack.Opportunity knocking?

The next Niatross? Perhaps, in terms of a quantum leap forward in 3yo speed, but in my book you're not a champion of that calibre if you're ducking heat racing. Haven't SBSW's connections said they will not race in the Little Brown Jug?

Greg:

Of course you are correct about Red River Hanover owning the race record. My error.

It doesn't change my point though...SBSW is unlikely to have to pace in the 47 to 48 to win his first few races, when the world record for 3yos is 47.4, set at two lightning-fast tracks much later in the 3yo season.

Paul-

The fastest NA Cup ever was Red River Hanover-1:48.4 at Woodbine in 2002, not Total Truth.

He demolished the world record for 2yr olds. I won't be surprised if he does the same thing as a three year old. As far as how soon he does it, I won't speculate.

I know that some trainers like to extend their good colts early to perhaps intimidate other trainers into not going first over. But I don't know that Somebeachsomewhere's reputation before the qualifier needed any embellishment. This is one extraordinary horse.

Mr. Daley:

The world record for 3yo colts and geldings is 1:47.4, co-held by American Ideal (set at Lexington) and My Boy David (set at Springfield).

It's rather unlikely that Somebeachsomewhere will have to race anywhere near that speed in the Canadian springtime at Mohawk (which is where he will be racing in his early starts this year) over the next five weeks. The fastest mile ever in the North America Cup was 1:49.1 by Total Truth in 2006 at Woodbine. The record for the Burlington Stakes is 1:49.4 by Georgia Pacific in 2004 at Mohawk.

The Mohawk track record for 3yos is 1:48.4 set in 9/04 by Blissed Out.

If the trainer and owners expect the colt to go in 1:47 or 1:48 in the next few weeks, a 1:51.1 qualifier might seem about right.

Last week didn't they claim to have gone a training mile with a last quarter in something like 25?

What was the purse for that qualifier this morning?

Enough said...
