Supreme Court Ends Slaughterhouse Appeal

June 16th 2008

Hooray for the Supreme Court, which just a few moments ago declined to hear the appeal from the Illinois slaughterhouse that was closed due to a new state law in the Land of Lincoln. This is wonderful news to people who are opposed to the brutal slaughter of horses. Here "hot off the wires" is the Associated Press bulletin:

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Supreme Court has declined an appeal from the owners of a horse slaughtering plant who challenged an Illinois law prohibiting the killing of horses for human consumption. Cavel International Inc. closed its plant in DeKalb, Ill., last year after a federal appeals court upheld the ban. The company urged the justices to step in to allow the facility to reopen. The court did not comment on its order Monday. The plant was the last horse slaughterhouse in the United States. About 40,000 to 60,000 horses were there annually, and most of the meat was shipped to be eaten by diners overseas. Two other U.S. plants, both in Texas, also closed in 2007. The case is Cavel International, Inc., v. Madigan, 07-962. (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)

They are also shipped to Canada as well as Mexico. This needs to be stopped.

Earlier you had a posting which indicated an idea about a percentage of the handle coming out to pay for the upkeep of the horses who can no longer race. Other than my own posting, there were a total of three other postings in that thread. Those few responses lead me to think that a) people are opposed to horse slaughter until it costs them money (which this deduction would do) or b) they are not opposed to horse slaughter but know it is politically incorrect and don't want to say they are in favor of it. I may be wrong but unfortunately, I doubt it.

From Andrew: I think you are right, Allan. It helps explain why the USTA feels it only needs to charge less than a monthly cable bill in annual dues.

This is very good news indeed. Now the Congress needs to go one step further and halt the transfer and sale of those horses who were previously destined to go to Illinois and Texas, who will now go to the Mexican slaughter houses. We didn't really think that this would be the end of it did we?

Apparently the new process is to ship them to Mexico to meet their fate...skirting the US laws.
