The Sad Details of the Demise of Montreal Racing

July 3rd 2008

The Montreal Gazette yesterday had a mournful piece about what Montreal's horsemen and horsewomen are doing now that L'Hippodrome de Montreal has been shut down pending bankruptcy (or salvation). My thanks to the HTA for first bringing it to our attention.

Regular readers know that the former "Blue Bonnets" raceway in the city of my birth holds a huge place in my heart but regardless of your ties to racing it is SO sad to read quotes from people like Jacques Hebert-- a Hall of Famer-- lamenting what to do with his staff now that there is no racing. We are all in this together and one track's demise affects us all. I just wish there were more we could do. I'm told that there are some private interests up there who are working on a solution. I wish them all the luck in the world.

I feel their pain. In this area we've had to deal with the demise of Roosevelt, Garden State, Liberty Bell and Brandywine.

I see in the article that some horses are being sent to slaughter or being euthanized now that Montreal has closed. WHERE IS THE RACING COMMISSION IN ALL OF THIS? When Shoreline Star in CT closed, the first thing the state commission in charge of wagering did was ensure that all the greyhounds were accounted for and none of them were put down; those that went to other greyhound tracks were fine, they made sure the others were adopted.

I feel sorry for all those whose livelihood has been jeopordized, but there should be something in place to protect these horses.
