The Yonkers Trot: Time, Place and Manner

June 19th 2008

I got a nice email this morning from Bob Galterio at Yonkers Raceway, who helped explain to me why the Yonkers Trot-- one of the races in trotting's Triple Crown-- will be raced in June this year as opposed to later in the year. I had asked Bob to help me understand the change in timing because it is disappointing to me that horses like Snow White and Deweycheatum and Blue York Yankee will NOT be racing.

Here is what Bob wrote: "We originally were told from some prominent horesmen that we'd do better in attracting horses if we went after the Hambo, so we tried that for awhile, but it didn't really help.  So we thought we'd try going befor the Hambo as we had done before.  We couldn't find a date in July where there wasn't a conflict.  I think we will probably move it back into Aug. next year."

In my view, the Yonkers Trot should be raced every year between the Hambletonian and the Kentucky Futurity-- in late August or early September. When it is late, like it was last year, it scares away trotters. When it is early, some of the best trotters aren't ready. Anyone disagree? Let me know. Thanks.

Calls for modernizing the standardbred Triple Crowns have been occuring for at least two decades.

In 1975, Bonefish passed on the Yonkers Trot though he did win The Hambletonian a DuQuoin that year.

Others have commented before In order to maximize the media attention to the Triple Crown of Harness racing these races need to be held within a 4 to 5 week period. The attention span of the public for this event will not survive several months and therefore the Tripple Crown of Harness Racing gets little media attention. This is most unfortunate since we're missing a great opportunity to show case harness racing.

A 5/8 mile track would be the likely choice for a 3rd track since many horseman avoid 1/2 mile tracks with their top 3 yr olds.

Unfortunately, changing the date would not matter. Too many horses are being 'managed' so they won't go on a half-miler no mater what. Sportsmen/Sportwomen will race on a half mile track at least once; people who are looking at it only in a dollar and cents way will stay away from the half mile oval.
