Trotting's Royalty Shines on Friday Night

July 5th 2008

Hello and Happy Saturday. I don't know about you but after last night's races at the Meadowlands (results are here) I'm starting to believe that the twin trotting giants-- Snow White and Deweycheatumnhowe-- may ultimately make for a better storyline this year than Somebeachsomewhere.

The filly was spectacular in the stretch Friday night, pulling away from Saorse like she had been ejected out of a cannon. And the colt? He was dominant, winning in .52 and change. What a great thing it would be for harness racing for Snow White to stay healthy, for Dewey to remain undefeated, and for both to compete in the Hambletonian in a month.

It's ironic that you used the term "trotting royalty" today.According to the U.S.T.A website, Jean Rene Gougeon has passed away. One need only read the article there to understand what an incredible horseman he was. With his wins in all the great races of Europe, he dominated his entire continent.

When he came to North America, he rarely was outshone. Anyone who was at Roosevelt Raceway the night that Une De Mai raced first over the entire 1 1/4 mile, and drew off from the great Nevele Pride (Stanley Dancer in the sulky) and Fresh Yankee ( Joe O'Brien ) to win the Roosevelt International Trot, will never forget his horsemanship.

Few horsemen had the talent and the impact of Mr. Gougeon. May he rest in peace.

From Andrew: Thanks, Mark, for a wonderful eulogy. Appreciate it very much.
