Wild Horses: The Planned Slaughter

July 3rd 2008

In keeping with our anti-horse slaughter theme this week....Deanne Stillman, the author of an important book about America's mustangs, passed along yesterday an interview she did recently with Newsweek magazine about a U.S. government proposal to euthanize approximately 6,000 wild horses in western states to reduce the population of mustangs to about 27,000. Her summary? "The fox (the Bureau of Land Management) is guarding the hen house."

Check out the interview. It's worthwhile.

It is easy to criticize the government on this, and I will be the first one to question them on how they plan to euthanize these horses, but we must realize the time may come when the industry institutes a successful industry-wide rescue program there may be limits to the financial support available to support all these unwanted horses and what will we do? At some point, we will not be able to adopt them all out and we will not have the financial resources to board them all for their natural lives, so tough decisions will need to be made and I suspect euthansia will be the answer for the most infirmed of our horses. That being said, it is a lot better than sending a horse to the slaughterhouse.

Someone should thin out the herd of bureaucrats roaming the streets of Washingon, DC while grazing on our tax dollars.
