Longshot Modern Legend appears on the cover as he upsets a four-horse Ron Burke brigade (that included the overwhelming 1-5 favorite Sweet Lou and 2012 Canadian Pacing Derby champ Foiled Again) to win the $634,000 Canadian Pacing Derby at Mohawk for owner-trainer Dave Drew. It was the first time a Canadian-owned and based horse won the Pacing Derby since Ponder in 2005.
No one was going to deny the talented 2 year olds Artspeak and JK She'salady in two of the richest races of the season for their generation, the $667,000 Metro Pace and the $480,000 She's A Great Lady, respectively. Both finals were contested on Saturday, August 30 at Mohawk.
With his 1:49.4 victory in the Cane Pace at Tioga Downs, Lyonssomewhere was able to place his name on the eligible list for the Little Brown Jug on Thursday, September 18. The Jug conditions were changed a decade ago to allow the winner of the Cane or Messenger to be supplemented if not already eligible.
The annual Blooded Horse Summer Mixed Sale turned into a yearling sale as this year's sale saw 212 yearlings go through the auction ring and included the sale-topper, a Fly Fly Buckeye filly who was purchased by Dean Davis for $20,000. Complete sale results are included in this issue.
