$100,000 finals at Dover

December 05, 2005 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Vrahos Again and Westgate Alexis won the trots, He's Personal and Staying Power took the paces in the four $100,000 Delaware Standardbred Breeders Fund (DSBF) finals on a cold and windy Sunday (Dec. 4) at Dover Downs.

Vrahos Again led off the DSBF finals as Rod Allen guided the CR Commando trotting colt to a 2:03.3 victory by a long nose. Owned by Niss Allen Inc., Vrahos Again had to hold off a determined bid by Camp Commando, driven by Art Stafford Jr., the length of the stretch.

As expected, the $100,000 filly trot final was all Westgate Alexis. Brandon Givens drove the Wayne Givens-trained CR Commando filly into the lead after the opening quarter and never looked back. They scored in 2:02.3 for the filly's sixth win in a row and seventh in eight races. CU Better overcame a break at the start to rally for Manley Brown to finish second. Westgate Alexis has now won $130,200 for breeders-owners Vicki Givens and Harvey Simpson.

Both DSBF pacing finals had surprise winners. William Moffett's homebred Staying Power, off at 10-1, was in the right spot at the right time for Tony Morgan and wound up the winner of the $100,000 filly pace.

Heavy favorite Ireneonthemove made a break at the start and was far back, chasing seven rivals. Kevin Sizer pulled the Powerful Toy filly to the outside on the clubhouse turn and began to pass horses on the backstretch. By the time the field reach the final turn, Ireneonthemove has moved into fourth on the outside and took off after the leaders.

But Morgan had opened up with Staying Power just enough in the lane to hold Ireneonthemove by one-half length in 1:56.2.

He's Personal, a 7-1 shot owned by Les Walls and Jack Upchurch, closed strongly with Jim Morand at the controls, for the second consecutive week to catch front-pacing Quick Trim, the odds-on favorite with Brad Hanners driving, in the closing strides in 1:55.2.
