A sellout crowd of more than 400 people attended the Jack Kopas Roast to support the Ontario Standardbred Adoption Society Tuesday night in the Carousel Room at Western Fair Raceway in London, Ont.
The appreciative crowd were enthralled by the evening's excellent roasters Doug McIntosh, Dr. John Egloff, Ron Waples, Dr. John Hayes, John Campbell and John Kopas, whose stories about Jack Kopas were warm and witty and enjoyed by all including the guest of honor.
The Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association of Ontario made a check presentation of $25,000 to OSAS at the event which put the total amount raised, with the silent auction Tuesday night and the online auction, to over $140,000 with donations still coming in.
The highest price paid at Tuesday night's event was $2,000 for a jogger paid by Bill Loyens of Windsong Acres. Colin Johnson paid $17,100 for the Featherlite three horse gooseneck trailer to top the online auction. The trailer was donated by Belore Trailers and several top drivers from WEG.
"I would like to personally thank everyone who attended the Jack Kopas Roast. The generosity, good will and support of both OSAS and Jack and Alice Kopas was overwhelming. Thanks to all donors and bidders both online and at the roast, and all those who helped, there are far too many to mention," said event organizer Jack Darling. "Harness racing is a great sport and we truly have the best and most generous people." (OSAS)
