May 21, 2007 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Kenneth J returned to the races Sunday at Tioga Downs, winning his seasonal debut in 1:52.2, with an effortless victory in the second division elimination of the Empire Breeder’s Classic.

The 3-year-old son of Bettors Delight is owned by Ken Jacobs of Baldwinsville, N.Y., and trained by Linda Toscano.

Finding himself sitting fourth through opening fractions of :27.2 and :55.4, Jim Morrill Jr. sent Kenneth J first-over and was on top at the three-quarter pole in 1:23.4. The 3-year-old colt pacer opened up with ease on the field with Morrill not even lifting the whip to win by seven lengths.

Making next week’s Empire Breeder’s Classic final for New York-bred 3-year-old colt and gelding pacers are division winners Joey Rico and Kenneth J along with Lindys Bandit, Allamerican Idol, Ben Bono, The Best, U Bettor Watch Out, Pop Z Pop and Quandary Hanover. The top four finishers from each division made the final while a draw was done between both fifth-place finishers, and The Best was drawn over Pesto Hanover.

It was Paulas Best who won the first division for 3-year-old filly pacers in 1:53.4 for trainer Ross Croghan. It was one of Morrill’s five wins on the 13-race card along with a sweep in the two divisions for filly pacers. This was the first start of the season for last year’s New York Sire Stakes Champion for 2-year-old pacing fillies.

The 3-year old daughter of Pro Bono Best won four of her eight starts in 2006 while hitting the board in seven for owner Lawrence Roman of Mt. Vernon, N.Y. The win pushed her earnings to more than $144,000 in just nine lifetime starts.

Betting Machine won the second division for 3-year old filly pacers for trainer George Teague Jr. It was the second win of the season in just the second start for the 3-year-old daughter of Bettors Delight. Morrill also drove this one to victory with a first-over effort in 1:53.4.

Making the Empire Breeder’s Classic final for 3-year-old fillies are division winners Paulas Best and Betting Machine along with Bettoronthebeach, JK Pure Pearl, Sky Queen, Lilmisswiggles, Yankee Lacey, Ubetterthink Think and Miss Chris. The two fifth-place finishers in the draw for the final spot were Lilmisswiggles and La Diavla with Lilmisswiggles being the survivor.

The Empire Breeder’s Class finals will take place on Sunday, May 27, at Tioga Downs with a post time of 1:15 p.m. (Tioga)
