1:53.1 trot mile at Pocono

Armbro Barrister, a 5-year-old stallion, trotted the fastest mile in the history of Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs in Tuesday’s Open Handicap, a 1:53.1 mile that lowered the previous mark by a second and also set a North American record.


Trained by Paul Doherty and driven by Ray Schnittker, the son of Malabar Man led at every pole. He shattered his own Pocono mark for aged stallions that he had set earlier this year. Armbro Barrister had also shared the previous fastest overall trot at the track with SJ’s Caviar, which stood at 1:54:1.


In addition, the 1:53:1 mark set a North American record for fastest mile by an older horse on a five-eighths mile track and equals the mark set by the mare Windylane Hanover in 2004. The world record for older horses is 1:51.3 by Varenne in Europe.
