1,900 more slots in Indiana

June 10, 2008 | Print View

Hot on the heels of Hoosier Park opening its 92,000 square-foot casino June 2, Indiana Downs began the slots era in Shelbyville Monday, June 9. Indiana Live! Casino opened the doors of its 70,000 square-foot temporary facility to the public at 10 am. The structure offers 1,900 slot machines and a Wolfgang Puck restaurant, and the casino is being marketed as Vegas attitude with an Indiana address.

Prior to the opening, Indiana Live! Casino hosted an invitation-only VIP event Friday, June 6. Beginning at 11 a.m. and carrying through 9 p.m., the event served as a test day, a requirement of the Indiana Gaming Commission. Indiana Live! General manager Mark Hemmerle said officials received good feedback, and on Saturday afternoon, were given approval from the IGC to open Monday.

“Everyone on Friday said one of three things, ‘Wow,’ ‘You truly brought a little Vegas to Indiana,’ or ‘We are definitely coming back to this place,’” noted Hemmerle. “We heard it continually. The energy was just fantastic. We had two $20,000 jackpot winners. When they were announced you could hear the cheers going up.”

Hemmerle said there are several events scheduled for opening week, including fireworks and live entertainment by Blood, Sweat & Tears and Kenny Loggins. The concerts are free to visitors that sign up for the casino’s rewards club. In addition, the grand opening kicks off with a $100,000 cash, gas and car giveaway. Through June 29 Indiana Live! will conduct daily drawings where patrons can win $50 gas cards or cash prizes. They close out the month by giving away a Mercedes Benz Smart Car.

“We want to set the tone that this is the place to come in Indiana,” Hemmerle added. “At Indiana Live! you’ll get a little more bang for your buck.”

The temporary facility will be utilized while construction continues on a 233,000 square-foot complex set to open in early 2009. Baltimore-based developer The Cordish Company constructed the temporary facility and will develop the Indiana Live! permanent structure.--By James Platz
