2-year-old filly trotter Locksweeper wins in 1:54.3

Locksweeper demolished the Colonial Downs' track record and world record for 2-year-old trotting fillies on a greater-than-one-mile track Tuesday night with a 6 3/4-length win in 1:54.3 that swept 1998 Breeders Crown winner Musical Victory out of the record books.

Locksweeper was dominant from start to finish under the direction of trainer, driver and co-owner Dan O’Mara. The Lockkeeper filly sprinted to the front to set opening fractions of :27.4 and :57.3 with Ms. Tova and Lost In The Sauce in hot pursuit down the Colonial backstretch.

Ms. Tova recovered from a break before the start to reach second before the turn and was able to stay glued to Locksweeper’s flank around the turn. Electric Chicken, the 9-5 favorite, moved up behind Ms. Tova to reach third at the three-eighths pole and loomed large as the field turned for home after three-quarters in 1:25.4.

Locksweeper simply ate up the final straightaway, quickly drawing clear to take a three-length lead inside the eighth pole. Electric Chicken flattened out but Ms. Tova continued gamely to the wire in the race for second behind a lengthening Locksweeper.

Ms. Tova held on for second with a Tidy Ellen closing for third, 8 1/2 lengths behind Locksweeper.

The record-shattering win was Locksweeper’s fifth from 13 starts. The 1:54.3 clocking took a full second off the 1:55.3 mark Musical Victory established in the 1998 Breeders Crown. (Colonial Downs)
