After days of anticipation, Walter Haynes Jr. earned his 2,000th career victory Saturday, with the win coming in the evening’s ninth race with the 6-year old Robert Zink-trained gelding Soul Patrol. Hoosier Park president and general manager Rick Moore and director of Standardbred racing and operations Kevin Mack awarded him with a sign to commemorate the event. “It’s been a long time coming,” said Haynes. “It will be nice getting some more (wins), and to look towards 3,000. My wife, Sara, and I have 26 horses stabled at a farm just north of Hoosier Park, so we hope to have a good year.” A perennial top 10 driver at Hoosier Park, Haynes is best known for his consistency and strong stable of horses with Sara. Haynes is currently seventh in the leading driver standings, and his wife, Sara, is in a three-way tie for second on the trainer’s side. In the past 13 seasons at Hoosier Park, Haynes has finished the season amongst the top 10 drivers 10 times. He has twice finished second in the leading driver standings, in 1999 and 2000.
