2007 Ohio dates awarded

The Ohio State Racing Commission Thursday issued 850 live racing dates for 2007, with 476 live harness racing programs to be offered. Formal approval of all date requests—live and simulcast—for next year will be taken up when the commission meets in Columbus on Dec. 15.

In addition to the harness dates, which is six fewer than this year, there are 366 live Thoroughbred racing days scheduled, 24 fewer than in 2006, with an additional eight Quarter Horse dates.

In 2005, 960 live racing programs were offered in the state before a reduction to 872 live days this year, something strongly advocated by OSRC Chairman Norm Barron. At the time, the chairman said less live racing was necessary to allow Ohio racetracks to offer purse levels more competitive to purses raced for in neighboring states.

Thistledown (Thoroughbred track), racing 20 fewer live programs next year, and Raceway Park, offering six less, are responsible for next year’s reduction in live dates. Live date totals at the other five racetracks—Beulah Park, River Downs (both Thoroughbred tracks), Lebanon Raceway, Northfield Park and Raceway—are identical or vary only slightly.

In order for Ohio’s commercial racetracks to schedule fewer live days than the 1,078 mandated by the Ohio Revised Code, all racetracks managements and representatives of the thoroughbred and harness horsemen had to agree to the reduction.

The agreement to implement the reduction in 2006 was considered an experiment, but one that could be renewed from year to year if all parties agree.

A summary of the live racing days for each of the seven racetracks appears below.
