Stormaway, who won the $283,000(C) Molson Pace final at Western Fair in May at odds of 19-1, was euthanized after being hurt in a race accident in the final turn during Saturday night's $115,000(C) Masters Pacing Series final at Georgian Downs.
Stormaway, with trainer, driver and co-owner Dan Megens, were last in the field and then hooked the sulky of Along Came Polly, who was racing in front of them. The incident caused Stormaway to fall to the track and Megens to be thrown from the sulky. Megens emerged without any serious injury.
Stormaway, a 6-year-old son of Northern Luck, was owned by Megens in partnership with breeders Janice Van Nest and Peter Caetano. He earned nearly $300,000 as a 2 year old, with his victories including an Ontario Sire Stakes Gold final and finals of the Youthful and Spring Championship series. Overall, he had 19 wins in 46 starts and earnings of $546,936. He took his mark of 1:50.1 as a 2 year old in a Gold elimination at Mohawk.
