Reluctantly, the New South Wales Harness Racing Club (NSWHRC) has withdrawn from conducting the World Cup of Harness Racing next year at Menangle Park. The decision announced on Thursday is based primarily on the upheaval in the world financial markets.

“It is unfortunate that we will not be conducting the World Cup next year considering the momentum the event had gathered since it was announced“ NSWHRC chief executive John Dumesny said.

‘The Club was honoured when approached by Kevin Seymour to be the inaugural host of the World Cup however with the current world financial crisis the Club has been left with no alternative other than to pass on the opportunity.

“A condition set by the Directors when accepting the invitation to conduct the World Cup was that it could not impact on the budgeted prizemoney for all other races conducted by the Club.

“Whilst we had secured a half million dollar pledge from Watpac, arranging the other half million has proven to be difficult especially over the past month.

“In the best interests of all it was decided to withdraw from the concept at this stage so that the connections of horses which may have been considered for a World Cup invitation have advance knowledge when planning their future racing campaigns.” Dumesny concluded.

Kevin Seymour the visionary of the World Cup was completely understanding of the Club’s decision.

“These are unprecedented financial times and I can completely understand that the Directors of the NSWHRC have a responsibility to act prudently and responsibly as custodians of the industry’s finances.

“Watpac will continue to be supportive of harness racing in NSW and our association with the Club will continue to be strong and hopefully expand in the future.” Mr Seymour said. (from harness.au.org)
