Chotat Milk and driver Brett Miller controlled the fractions and the short field to take the $7,650 Lady Pace honoring Katie Terry at the Delaware (Ohio) County Fairgrounds. The Sunday afternoon program was the first as Little Brown Jug week begins, culminating in the 61st pacing classic Thursday, Sept. 21.

Miller eased the Jate Lobell mare off the gate and led the field of three past the opening quarter of :26.3. Chotat Milk used a middle half breather of 1:02 and came home in :28.4 to score a 2-1/4 length victory over Red Hot Dame (Dave Palone) and Pine Mountain Lady (Kayne Kauffman).

Chotat Milk is owned by Jay Corey, David Habeger and trainer Virgil Morgan Jr.

Lady Pace Honoree Terry is a long time volunteer in the marketing and public relations department at the Delaware County Fair.

Tady Strikes Again (Miller) proved that she is one of the state’s best as she scored a 5 1/2-length victory over Dirt Hog (Jim Dailey) and Stable Creek Barb (Barb Lewis) in the second $9,400 division of the Ohio Breeder’s Championship for 4 and 5-year-old trotters.

The final time of 1:57 established a new track record for aged mare trotters and was just three-fifths off the world record.

The Striking Sahbra mare won for the 11th time in 24 seasonal starts for trainer Morgan and owner Barnett Zimmerman of Deerfield, Ill.

In the first division, Whotookwhat (Ray Paver, Jr.) scored in 1:57.3 over That Fly’n Angel (Greg Wright Jr.) and Sandy’s Attitude (Hugh Beatty Jr.).

Whootookwhat is owned by William G. and Barbara A. Paull of Powell, Ohio.

Ohio Triple Crown Osborne’s Gypsy (Greg Grismore) defeated a field of eight in the first division of the $69,698 (div.) Ohio Breeder’s Championship for freshman pacers, thus sweeping the Ohio Triple Crown.

The On The Attack lass received all of the calls as she scored a 2 3/4-length victory over Memphis Glow (Troy Boring) and Ken’s Mystifier (Trent Bates) in 1:56.1.

Osborne’s Gypsy won the $27,200 Ohio State Fair Stakes on Aug. 3 and the $100,000 Ohio Sires Stake final on Sept. 9. She is trained by Eric Hamlet for Jerome T. Osborne of Mentor, Ohio.

In the second $34,849 division, C’mon Towners Jazz (Mike Wilder) scored a major upset with a two-length victory over Sam’s Lil’ Kim (Mark Winters) in 1:57.

The Towner’s Big Guy filly recorded her third seasonal victory for Jerry Sommers, John Rhoads Jr. and Charles Wolfe. C’mon Towners Jazz rewarded her backers with a $53 win payoff.

Driver Miller swept both divisions of the $54,200 Ohio Breeders Championship for 3-year-old filly trotters. First division winner Spur-Ann-E set a 1:56.2 stakes record. Jail House Denise won the second division in 1:57.

Three different fillies raced on top in the first half-mile but Miller guided Spur-Ann-E to the top for good just past the opening quarter and the Steeler Spur filly won her 12th season start by three lengths over Buck I St. Pat (Dave Palone) and Cadamamie (Grismore). The winner is trained by Scott Cox and owned by John Schlabach of Millersburg, Ohio. The old stakes record of 1:58 was set in 1987 by Erick’s Impluse.

Jail House Denise grabbed the lead from Madeline’s Charm (Sam Noble III) just after the first quarter and never looked back, winning the second division by four lengths over Fresh Honey (Jeff Fout) and Buterscotchndaleys (Grismore). I Like Stephanie, who won last Saturday’s $100,000 Ohio Sire Stakes Championship, was scratched sick.

Jail House Denise, by Jailhouse Jesse, is trained by Morgan and owned by Joseph Muscara of Huntingdon Valley, Pa. (LBJ)
