It may have taken a 10-hour drive for Jimmy Takter to make it to The Red Mile Thursday night but he arrived in time to drive his $220,000 trotting filly Fabulous Kemp to a victory in an opening-round division of the Perretti Farms Series.
Takter was scheduled to fly from Newark to Lexington Thursday morning, but when he arrived at the airport he discovered the extremely long lines due to the heightened security imposed earlier. Realizing he would likely miss his plane, Takter decided to drive instead.
“I got back in my car and drove 10 hours. I got here at about 4 o’clock,” a mud-caked Takter told harnessracing.com shortly after he directed Fabulous Kemp to a 2:08 victory in the night’s first race over a rain-soaked, sloppy clay oval in Lexington.
Fabulous Kemp is a daughter of Yankee Glide out of the mare Emilie Cas El, she a full sister to standout performers Conway Hall, Angus Hall and Andover. Her Red Mile victory in the $4,000 event was her second in three starts; she won her debut in 1:59.3 in a $20,500 New Jersey Sire Stakes contest July 13 at the Meadowlands, and then finished seventh in the $175,000 final the following week.
Fabulous Kemp, who is owned by Zotobamo Ab of Sweden, led another pair of well-bred fillies across the wire. Finishing second was Aurora Hall, a half sister to 2006 Hambletonian starter Algiers Hall and Astro Hall, while taking third was Irene’s Lucky Lady, a half sister to 2006 Trotter of the Year and three-time millionaire Mr. Muscleman.
