For the second consecutive week, the 10-year-old veteran trotter Mighty Maori A captured the Wednesday night feature at Pompano Park, prevailing in 1:59.1 for driver Dan Clements. Starting from post three, Mighty Maori A was quick off the gate for Clements but was content to settle in the pocket after yielding the top spot to Orpha Lou (Wally Hennessey), who showed the way through fractions of :28.4, :58.2, and 1:28.1.
As the trotters exited the final turn, Mighty Maori A was angled off the pylons and quickly sprinted to the front, overtaking Orpha Lou and opening up a 1 ¼-length advantage in mid-stretch before holding off the late charge of S Sparrow Express (Kevin Wallis) and Giambi (Mickey McNichol) to prevail by a neck. Mighty Maori A returned $20.60, $10.80, $8.20 for the victory. S Sparrow Express paid $20.00, $4.80 for second, while Giambi brought in $18.40 for third. Owned and trained by Dave Mogan of Coconut Creek, Mighty Maori A has visited the winner’s circle in two of 12 starts this year. The Wednesday victory pushed the lifetime bankroll for the Australian-bred son of Maori’s Idol over the $160,000 mark. (Pompano Park)
