Mr. Cantab, the highest-priced yearling colt sold at auction last year with a price of $350,000 at the Lexington Select Sale, made his career debut Tuesday morning at The Red Mile and it was a successful outing as he won in 1:58.4.
A son of 2003 Trotter of the Year Cantab Hall out of the Joie De Vie mare Miss Marita, who recently died, Mr. Cantab is owned by John Carver in partnership with breeder Brittany Farms. Andy Miller drove Mr. Cantab in the qualifier for trainer Erv Miller. The trotter closed from third at the top of the stretch and posted a final quarter of :28.1 to draw clear by 4 3/4 lengths over his competition.
Mr. Cantab was the last foal of Miss Marita, who was euthanized Aug. 18 after having undergone colic surgery a week earlier. Mr. Cantab is a half brother to two-time divisional champion Passionate Glide, who won the 2005 Breeders Crown and 2006 Hambletonian Oaks, 2000 Hambletonian Oaks champion Marita's Victory, and two-time New Jersey Sire Stakes champion Mr. Vic.
