$3K claimer wins Nfld Open

A former $3,000 claimer, Lucca's Revenge ($3.20), again showed why trainer Kevin Ehrhardt is such an astute horseman, when Brett Miller steered the 5-year-old Corelone gelding to an easy, 1:58 victory in the $8,000 Open trot on Monday night at Northfield Park.

Parked past the :28.1 quarter, Miller cleared his charge to the front and never looked back, cruising to a 1-1/4 length, 1:58 win, which could easily have been faster.

Lucca's Revenge won his 14th start since being claimed by Don Shaffer and Charles Ferrette early last year, and pushed his career earnings over the $80,000 mark with the win.

The score was one of five on the night for Miller, and kicked off an All-Brett Pick-3 that yielded a paltry $12.80 when he steered the favorites Coastal Wind, also trained by Ehrhardt and owned by Shaffer and Ferrette, and Tony Peregrin's Royal Trust to victory.

Ryan Stahl picked up a pair of wins and continued to close the margin on leading Northfield pilot Aaron Merriman. (Northfield Park)
