July 27, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

The Merrie Annabelle eliminations got underway with plenty of drama as 1-9 betting favorite Possess The Magic broke stride in the first turn, but then rallied to miss winning by a nose Thursday night. The winners were Michelle’s Angel (1:57.4), Gerri’s Joy (1:58.2) and Chez Lucie (1:58).

In the first elimination Possess The Magic started from post five, but early in the first turn the filly became rough gaited and then broke stride. Mike Lachance, the filly’s usual driver, gathered her back together, but the filly lost several lengths.

Enjoy N My Lady led the field and kept her mind on the job at hand when Celebrity Feeling begin to inch up on the outside, but then broke stride.

By the time Enjoy N My Lady showed the field into the last turn, Possess The Magic was second-over and poised for a rally if she could maintain her composure. Despite a couple of shaky steps early in the stretch drive, Possess The Magic got within a nose of Michelle’s Angel, who remained brave through her first-over journey.

Ron Pierce drove Michelle’s Angel, a filly by Andover Hall out of Almost An Agel. Jeff Snyder bought the filly at last fall’s Harrisburg sale with a winning bid of $230,000. Richard Norman trains the filly.

In the second elimination, 25-1 longshot Gerri’s Joy, a homebred owned by Nicholas Cimino, eked out a nose victory over Clever Catch. The winner is by Enjoy Lavec and is out of the Garland Lobell mare CC Jennifer P.

Gerri’s Joy, who was driven by David Miller, used a second-over trip to launch her rally while Clever Catch, a daughter of Andover Hall, set the fractions.

The third elim had seven entries, but three broke stride at the start and before the first quarter was reached it had turned into a three-horse race. Mario Zuanetti led the way with Flight Surgeon, but Chez Lucie rallied from second in the stretch drive to win the race in 1:58.

David Miller drove Chez Lucie, a filly by Malabar Man out of a Valley Victory mare who was sold as a yearling for $28,000. George Ducharme trains the filly for owners Paul Fontaine and Alfred Ross.

The top three finishers from each elim—plus the fastest fourth-place finisher—advanced to the final.
