$40,000 Yonkers Trot elims contested

August 18, 2007 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Foreign owned, American sired colts dominated the Yonkers Trot eliminations Saturday with Adrian Chip walking to a 2:01.2 victory in the first elim and Primary As taking the second elim in 1:58.2.

At the :29.4 first quarter, Adrian Chip pulled to set the fractions, with Quite Easy and Jimmy Takter settling for the pocket trip.  Up Front Larry pulled just before the 1:02.3 half but couldn’t make the front to a 1:32.3 third quarter.  Adrian Chip and trainer/driver Robert Bergh held off Up Front Larry and Yannick Gingras on the outside who finished second and Quite Easy coming up the inside for third.

Adrian Chip, who is owned by Stall Tre Puckar of Sweden, raced mostly in Europe but came to America to race in the Hambletonian.  After winning his elimination and finishing second in the final to Donato Hanover, his connections decided to stay in the U.S. and race in the Yonkers Trot.

In the second elimination Trond Smedshammer took Primary As to the lead for a :28.4 first quarter and the 3-1 shot never looked back.  Nate K, with Yannick Gingras up, put some pressure on the Malabar Man colt but then went off stride.  Primary As easily held off Green Day and Cat Manzi, who came out of the pocket to finish second.  Got That Look and Andy Miller came up to finish third.

Primary As comes off a win in the Colonial at Chester Downs, proving he can perform on any size track.  Brian Sears, his regular driver was in Mohawk Saturday, so trainer Smedshammer took over for the win at Yonkers.  Primary As is owned by the Kittelsen Racing Stable of Norway.

The first four finishers from each elimination will come back for the August 25 $644,770 Yonkers Trot final.
