5YO Ramona Disomma wins Overbid final

March 19, 2010 | Print View

Ramona Disomma, a 5-year-old mare by Pacific Fella, gained the lead on the final turn and held off a pack of challengers in the stretch to win the $115,000 Overbid Final for older pacing mares Friday night at Meadowlands Racetrack.

Ramona Disomma and driver George Brennan slid into third on the rail as 7-5 favorite Ginger and Fred rushed up to take the lead from Knock Three Times in a swift :26.4 opening quarter. Ginger And Fred reached the half in :54.3 before Brennan angled Ramona Disomma out to challenge her on the far turn.  Ramona Disomma easily gained the advantage entering the stretch and held off a late rail rally by Sportsfancy to win by a length in 1:50.4. Flirtiscape closed from far back to finish third.

“I was just trying to get away the best I can and landed in the three-hole,” Brennan said.  “The fractions were quick and because [Ginger And Fred] came first over at [the quarter], I knew I would just have to take my chances inside. As it turned out, I was able to sit until the turn and make my move there. In the middle of the turn I knew I had Ginger And Fred, but there were some good horses behind us and I was never confident [about winning] until about 10 feet from the wire.”

Ramona Disomma paid $7.20 as she posted her third win in 10 starts this season. After winning the first leg of the Overbid, she was buried in traffic on the pylons and finished fourth in the second leg of the series on March 12. Brennan credits that race as having helped Ramona Disomma come into the Overbid Final in peak condition.

“There’s not much too her, she’s small,” Brennan noted. “She was coming into this race really well. Last week wasn’t the trip I wanted. It was either be fifth over or, I had to take my chances up the inside. She was overloaded with pace, so she was coming into this race really well.”

Ramona Disomma, trained by Jacob Hartline, finished second to Chancey Lady in the $80,000 Cape and Cutter Final on February 19 at the Meadowlands. She's now earned $511,078 for owner/breeder Anatolia Racing Stable of Hopewell Junction, NY. (Meadowlands)
