7-furlong race at Woodbine

Woodbine Racetrack officials are expecting a current world record to fall Monday night as the Toronto track's fifth race is a $15,000 conditioned pace at a distance of seven-eighths of a mile. The current world record for the distance is 1:51.3, set in 1997 at Hoosier Park by Ima Noble Son and driver D.R. Ackerman.



"We just wanted to try something different and maybe add a different dimension to the racing," said assistant race secretary Dave Anderson. "Obviously it's going to add more excitement to the race card and we're trying to get a buzz.



"At this distance, you have to look at the race differently--especially the drivers because they will want to get out quickly and get a good position. If the bettors and horsemen give us some good feedback we might attempt the same thing with another class possibly."
