Eighty-two-year-old Eldon Spearman of Mt. Vernon, Ohio, piloted his 3-year-old Yankee Paco trotter Boy Meets Grill to victory in Monday's third race at Northfield, becoming the oldest driver to win a race in Northfield history. It was the 102nd career win for Spearman, who drives in only about a dozen races a year, and his first since 2005.
Boy Meets Grill was making his first seasonal start and overcame a tough trip. Sitting in the pocket, he pulled going to the half when Wesley's Fortune made a bold move to the outside, and then went three wide around that one, eventually getting a one length win over fast-closing Fortune King in 2:03.3.
Forty-seven-year-old Bob Eidens drove Fortune King, while 64-year-old Ben Miller finished off the trifecta with Wesley's Fortune. The three trainer-drivers combined age is 193 years, a track record. (Northfield Park)
