84 year old steers winner

Orrin Phipps, 84, scored his first driving victory of 2006 and the 127th of his career Tuesday afternoon at Plainridge Racecourse.

Phipps drove Chooch, a 6-year-old son of Muscles Yankee, to victory in 2:00.2, bringing the trotter home in a $4,000 Conditional event at odds of 28-1.

A lifelong resident of Yarmouth, Maine, Phipps had 10 wins in 2003, nine in 2004 and six victories last year. Born, Phipps, who was born on Oct. 19, 1921, only drives horses that he owns and trains.
