A 163-year-old exacta

Return Home
July 26, 2006 | Print View

In what has to be a world record, 91-year-old driver Leo Burns won a race at the Albion, Ill., fair Tuesday night, with 72-year-old Connel Willis finishing second, making it a 163-year-old exacta (there was no wagering on the race). That begs to ask: What was 38-year-old Patrick Melloy Jr. doing driving the third-place finisher, especially with 68-year-old Ernest Smith also in the race (with fifth-place finisher AJ's Little One)?

Remarkably, Burns has now won all five of his drives in 2006, all coming with his 2-year-old filly trotter Winsome Wyoming. On Tuesday, Winsome Wyoming won in 2:05.4, defeating Willis' Gumcorner Flo by 21 lengths. Gumcorner Flo is a full sister to the $205,000 winner Gumcorner Vic.

Also, one might wonder what Brian Cotton, who directed fourth-place finisher Queen Yankee was thinking while going around the track? After all, teenager Cotton won't turn 20 until Nov. 28.
