A blue chip win in Blizzard finale

Using a take-no-prisoners approach, Bette Blue Chip posted a sharp gate-to-wire effort in winning Thursday night's $42,800(C) final of the Blizzard Pacing Series for 3 and 4-year-old fillies and mares at Woodbine Racetrack.

Jody Jamieson sent the daughter of Art Major-Roses For Emma straight to the front from post five in the field of nine and she led entrymate First Draw at the quick first quarter of :26.4 on the slightly snow-covered oval with Almost A Lady getting away in third. Jamieson was then able to tap the brakes and got the second quarter in :30.3 for a half in :57.2. Maeve Hanover made a bid for the lead in the third quarter and prompted Bette Blue Chip to three-quarters in 1:25.4.

The pacesetter had plenty left in the tank as the field turned for home and kicked away from rivals with a 28-second final frame to stop the clock in 1:53.4. Almost A Lady found room along the pylons late and got up for second over First Draw who landed the show spot.

The victory was the first of the season in three outings for three-year-old filly who was a $52,000 yearling purchase at the 2006 Morrisville Sale. She was a one-time winner in three starts last season for trainer Carl Jamieson who co-owns along with Ken Henwood of Mississauga, Ont. (WEG)
