Accident at The Meadows

Return Home
March 14, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Star Fiftyfour, a 7-year-old trotter driven by Todd Cummings, fell in the ninth race Monday night at The Meadows, causing Sugar Donut, driven by Ralph Leogrande, to fall as well.

The accident occurred after the half-mile marker when it appeared that Star Fiftyfour got his shoe caught in a hobble and proceeded to fall to the racetrack. The accident happened so quickly that Leogrande had no time to get Sugar Donut out of harm's way and clipped Star Fiftyfour and they too fell to the track.

Cummings was transported to a Pittsburgh hospital with a possible rib injury, while Leogrande was taken to Washington Hospital with an apparent shoulder injury.

The two drivers remained in the hospital Tuesday morning, and both are now in a Pittsburgh hospital. Cummings, 36, has a collapsed lung and broken ribs; Leogrande, 48, has a broken collar bone, a broken shoulder blade and broken ribs.
