Action-Broadway Meets Poof She’s Gone

June 17, 2010 Send To A Friend  | Print View

On Friday night, June 18, at Mohawk, 3-year-old trotting fillies step out in a pair of $35,000 (C) eliminations for the Elegantimage Stakes. The center of attention could well be 2009 divisional champ Poof She’s Gone, who won her June 11 Casual Breeze split at Mohawk by a mere head in 1:54.4,--the slowest of the three divisions--after finishing an uncharacteristic third the week before. Poof She’s Gone is the morning line favorite from post eight at 8-5, but drawing into the same elimination and inside of Poof She’s Gone is the new season’s leader of the sophomore trotting filly class, Action-Broadway, listed at 2-1 from post five.

Trained by Virgil Morgan Jr. for owner and breeder Kenneth Sommer, the Broadway Hall filly roared home a 5 ¾-length winner in 1:52.4 in the Casual Breeze with Brett Miller in the bike.

Morgan said that while the fast time is nice, he would prefer that the filly who made several breaks last season while winning three of 11 starts, be more consistent.

“Poof She’s Gone, her record speaks for itself,” he said. “And she seems to always rise to the occasion. My filly wnet faster, raced great and got a great trip. The time is flashy, but she needs to be able to stay focused.”

Concentration comes with maturity, something Miller said he thinks is happening with Action-Broadway. “Last year, she was a bit flighty and easily distracted by a lot of things. Those were her only issues, but they were enough. She has to show consistency, as a lot of these other fillies have, before I’ll be satisfied.”

If Action-Broadway, who either failed to advance to or made breaks in the finals of several major stake races as a freshman, can compete successfully with the top fillies this season, there is one place she won’t have a chance to shine–the Hambletonian Oaks.

“She has a lot of the other big races, but not the Oaks,” said Morgan. “I am not really sure how that happened, but that’s the way it is."
