Dr. Elmer Marx Jr., the personal veterinarian for the great Adios when the horse lived at Delvin Miller's Meadow Lands Farm near The Meadows racetrack, died Saturday, April 8, in Juneau, Alaska. He was 79.

Born in St. Louis, Dr. Marx attended veterinary school in Panama while serving as a bombardier pilot on a B-29 in the U.S. Air Force before completing his education at the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned his veterinary medicine degree. After graduation he began his practice in Waynesburg, Pa., building the Waynesburg Animal Hospital, where horses became the focus of his practice.

In 1989 Dr. Marx and his wife, Brenda, moved to their dream retirement home in Juneau, where he continued to work as a veterinarian until May 2004.

In October 2004, Dr. Marx was honored during a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Waynesburg Animal Hospital. More than 2,000 people attended the event.

In addition to his wife, Dr. Marx is survived by his children Michaeal, Christopher, Susan Krouopa, Katherine West, Karl, Harry, Klaus, Gretchen Marx-Good, Elmer III, Luther (Gus) and Hans; 32 grandchildren; his sister, Virginia Kiernat; and a brother, William.

Memorial services will be held in Juneau later this summer.
