Making his first pari-mutuel start since Dec. 23, 2006, Admiral’s Express finished fourth in an $11,000(C) conditioned pace at Kawartha Downs Thursday night. The 12-year-old son of Admirals Galley, voted 2005 Horse of the Year in Sent off the 2-1 second choice, Admiral’s Express left from post six and Gassien was able to find a hole, but then they got shuffled back to last in the seven-horse field. Gassien found room in the stretch to get his charge in gear, but the late rally fell 2 ¾ lengths short of catching the winning Fleetwood Albert, who crossed the wire in 1:52.4. Favored Heaven Touch finished second with Mythic Voyage third.
Owned by Michiganders Ed and Cheryl Sayfie and Gary and Laurel Gust, Admiral’s Express was making his 296th career starts. Bolstered by 76 wins, Admiral’s Express has career earnings of $1,650,789, including his $889 fourth-place check garnered Thursday at Kawartha. He had been retired following his final start in 2006.
