It may have taken three starts but Canada’s 2005 Horse of the Year Admiral’s Express, who came out of a 17-month retirement in late May, won his first race since Dec. 2, 2006—and his 77th career victory—with a 1:53.2 effort at Kawartha Downs Tuesday night.

Racing in a $10,000(C) conditioned pace (an optional $20,000 claimer), the now 12-year-old son of Admirals Galley sat a pocket trip for most of the mile before driver Reg Gassien found room coming out of the last turn to draw clear with a final quarter of :27.3 to win by 2 ¾ lengths.

Owned by Michiganders Ed and Cheryl Sayfie and Gary and Laurel Gust, and trained by Ontario-based Mike Hales, Admiral’s Express has now made 296 starts over his career, with earnings of $1,656,465. He has a lifetime mark of 1:48.2 set at Woodbine in 2005, and also took a seasonal mark of 1:49.2 or better every year as a 7, 8, 9 and 10 year old.
