A Down Under dirty battle in Yonkers open

Return Home
December 16, 2007 Send To A Friend  | Print View

It was down and dirty between a pair of Down Unders in Saturday night's $30,000 Open Handicap Pace at Yonkers Raceway. The Flyin' Doctor N (Jeff Gregory) had his New Zealand nose on the line just before that of King Cat Anvil N (Jordan Stratton), getting the mile in 1:53.3.

Leaving from post position three (in one notch after the defection--judges--of Rain Train), The Flyin' Doctor N watched as Image of Dawn (Pat Lachance) led throuugh early intervals of :27.1 and :57 flat. The "Doctor" went first-up from fourth, putting the heat on toward the 1:25.2 three-quarters. The Flyin' Doctor N forged to a short lead turning for home, but King Cat Anvil N--as the 9-5 favorite--had his sights set on the passing lane.

He went that way, but was outgamed by the winner. Image of Dawn held third, with Forest Vic A (Steve Smith) and Armbro Animate (Stephane Bouchard) completing the cashers.

For The Flyin' Doctor N, a 7-year-old Sands a Flyin' gelding, it was was his seventh win in 26 seasonal starts ($134,228). He returned $7.90 as the second choice, leading a $24.60 exacta and $73.50 triple. Richard Norman trained the winner for Western Australia's Nevin Botica

Added Saturday props to Greg Grismore, who drove four winners on the 10-race card.(Yonkers)
