A dreamy win at Pompano

November 19, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Welu’s Dreamboat ($4) and driver Anthony Napolitano made amends for losing last week's $10,000 Open Handicap Pace by a head, returning on Saturday and wiring the field by a head in the top pace at Pompano Park.

Leaving from post four in the first-race feature, Napolitano went right to the front with Doctor Viagra (Brett Miller) grabbing the two-hole garden spot. They raced Indian-style until the half-mile mark when owner-driver Hilliard Graves sent Yankee Leader first over with Star Role (Stephen Lareau) following the outside flow.

As they raced down the stretch, Miller was able to challenge with Doctor Viagra, but they could not catch Welu’s Dreamboat at the wire. Eleven AM (Bruce Ranger) was third.

It was the 10th win this year for Welu’s Dreamboat, a 5-year-old gelding by Camluck, who is trained by Jacques Dupuis for the Maddy J Racing Stable of Deerfield Beach, Fla.

Ranger, Pompano Park’s all-time winningest driver, lit up the tote board Saturday as he guided 50-1 longshot Frontier ($102) to a three-quarter length triumph in the fifth race $4,400 pace.

Frontier, the lone 3 year old in the race against older rivals, was the highest odds in the race, and posted his third win this year with a lifetime record of 1:54.4 for the one-mile race. Paul Ministrelli of Brighton, Mich., owns Frontier, who is trained by William Gallagher. Candy’s Pool (Wally Hennessey) was second with Prodigal Two (Miller) third. (Pompano Park)
