Hambletonian runner-up Adrian Chip became a millionaire when he captured the $550,000 Orsi Mangelli in Milan, Italy, on Thursday night, winning his elimination heat and the final. The colt sired by Andover Hall was driven by his trainer, Robert Bergh, and with the approximate purse earnings of $235,000, the colt topped the $1 million mark in career earnings with the Mangelli victory.
Adrian Chip won his elimination heat with a mile-rated effort in 1:56.2. He was far superior in the final and only needed a 1:57-rated performance to win.
Swedish horses swept the top three places in the Mangelli. In addition to Adrian Chip, who is owned by Swedish hockey ace Peter Forsberg, the other Swedish-owned horses are Quintus Karsk, a son of Alf Palema, who finished second with Jorma Kontio aboard, and Star Azazell, by Running Sea, who took third for Per Lennartsson.
